Kilimanjaro Day Trek

PAMOJA SAFARIS

TRIP ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Kilimanjaro National Park protects Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain and Africa’s highest peak. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features various zones, from lush semi-tropical forest to heath, moorland, and arctic zones, ever-changing as one treks upwards.

Although the ultimate goal for many who visit the park is to summit to the top of the peak in six to nine days, not everyone has that kind of time (or desire)! For those who just want a taste of the famous mountain, we provide day excursions to the area, where you can experience being on the mountain through a half-day of mild-to-moderate trekking.

NOTE: For all day trip itineraries, it is necessary to already be in Arusha City, our starting point, on the morning of departure. It is not possible to do excursions on the same day as your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), regardless of arrival time, due to the time required for arrivals and transfers.

your adventure

Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater

After you have an early breakfast at your lodging, we’ll pick you up around 6:30 am and proceed with the four-hour drive from Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater.

Note: we can arrange a pick-up at any time, but the earlier we get to the park, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to get a glimpse of the summit of the mountain before clouds inevitably roll in during the early afternoon.

Marangu Route and Picnic Lunch

We’ll be hiking up the Marangu Route with an experienced mountain guide, ascending to Mandara Hut (around 8,900 feet/2,700 meters). As you hike, you’ll traverse through dense rainforests, encountering Colobus and blue monkeys, various bird species, and plant life found only on the mountain.

The trekking portion of the day involves a 3-4 hour hike up to the hut, where you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. Afterward, you’ll journey down the same path back to Marangu Gate, which takes about 2-3 hours.
After a return journey of four hours or so, you’ll return to your lodge in the evening, in time for a late dinner.
