OKAVONGO DELTA

A WILDERNESS OF WATER AND WILDLIFE

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of Africa’s most extraordinary ecosystems, a vast inland river delta that transforms the arid Kalahari Desert into a lush paradise of waterways, lagoons, and islands. Seasonal floods create a dynamic landscape teeming with life, attracting an abundance of wildlife including elephants, lions, hippos, buffalo, and over 400 species of birds. Unlike traditional savanna safaris, the delta offers unique ways to explore, from tranquil mokoro (dugout canoe) rides through reed-lined channels to walking safaris and boat cruises. This pristine wilderness provides intimate encounters with nature, where travelers can experience the rhythm of the floods and the harmony of wildlife thriving in one of the world’s last true wilderness areas. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta stands as both a natural wonder and a sanctuary of biodiversity.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The Okavango Delta offers incredible experiences year-round, but the timing of the floods greatly shapes the type of safari. Here’s a breakdown:

May to August: Peak flood season, when the delta transforms into a maze of waterways. This is the best time for mokoro excursions and boat safaris, offering serene journeys through reed-lined channels. Wildlife congregates on the islands, making game viewing excellent.

September to October: Water levels begin to recede, but wildlife sightings peak as animals gather around the remaining water sources. This is the hottest time of the year, but also one of the best for spotting predators in action.

November to April: The rainy season brings lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and excellent birdwatching as migratory species arrive. While wildlife is more dispersed, this period offers fewer crowds, lower rates, and a vibrant, rejuvenated ecosystem.

Overall, May to October is ideal for classic delta safaris, while November to April is perfect for bird enthusiasts and photographers seeking green-season beauty.
