Your comfort is of our utmost concern. Because of this, we use only the latest model, retrofitted Toyota Land Cruisers on our safaris.

Kilimanjaro: Rongai Route

Day 01: Transfer from hotel to Nalemoru (4mi/6.5km)

Once we pick you up from your hotel, we will head 2-3 hours to the village of Nalemoru. We will drive through the rural Chagga villages. The Rongai entrance has been moved away from the Kenya border, but it still considered the Rongai route. Once we arrive, we will eat packed lunches before our journey into the cypress plantations. Here you are able to spot several species of birds and colobus monkeys. (Total ascent: 8700ft/2650m, during 3-4 hours hiking.)

Day 02: First Cave Campsite to Kikelewa Caves Camp (5.6mi/9km)

As one of the longer days, we continue through the heather covered moorland until lunch, where we will eat at the Second Cave Camp at 11320ft (3450m). In order to acclimate to altitude change, we will be taking the Mawenzi route instead of ascending too quickly to the next camp. Although we will not ascend much higher than before lunch, the surrounding views are stunning. We will set up camp for the night at the Kikelewa Caves in the valley. (Total ascent: 3110ft/950m, during 6-7 hours hiking.)

** Note: Not recommended, but if you would like a more challenging and quicker route, we can skip the Mawenzi Tarn and continue towards the Kibo Huts.

Day 03: Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn (3.7mi/6km)

Today is a much shorter, but steeper climb than yesterday. Before leaving the camp, we will take advantage of the beautiful sunrise views of Kibo. As we head towards the Mawenzi Tarn campsite, the path will quickly rise in elevation and terrain becomes very reocky. Once we reach the top of the ridge, we will descend to our campsite at about (4320m). After lunch, you will have the time to check out some nearby paths with great photo opportunities, before settling down for the night. (Total ascent: 2400ft/730m, during 3-4 hours hiking.)

Day 04: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Huts (5.6mi/9km)

Starting the day, we head back towards Kibo and walk along the northern side of the saddle. The saddle is the barren plain of alpine desert between the two main peaks of Kilimanjaro, Mawenzi and Kibo. We will rest here in preparation for the midnight climb to the summit. (Total ascent: 1215ft/370m, during 4-5 hours hiking.)

Day 05: Summit attempt via Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak and descent to Horombo Huts (3.1mi/5km ascent + 9.3mi/15km descent)

Around 11:30pm the guides will wake you up to prepare for the midnight summit. Hot beverages and food will be provided. We will climb for 6-8 hours to Gillman's Point at 19229 ft (5861 m) to catch a beautiful sunrise from the highest point in Africa! Here we will celebrate, take photos and then begin the 5-6 hour descent down the mountain to get a full nights rest at the Horombo Huts.(Total ascent: 3280ft/1000m to Gilman's Point or 3920ft/1195m to Uhuru Peak, during 5-8 hours hiking. Total descent: 7200ft/2195m, during 5-6 hours hiking.)

Day 06: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate (12.5mi/20km)

After breakfast as we descend down the mountain, we will pass through several villages and plantations. Once arriving at the Marangu Gate, we will say grab a bite to eat and say our goodbyes to the guides. Our vehicles will take you and your crew back to your hotel for showers before our last night celebratory dinner. (Total descent: 6040ft/1840m, during 5 hours hiking.)
