Marangu Route

Day 01: Marangu Gate to Mandara huts (5mi/8km)

After breakfast, we will leave the Marangu gate early in the morning and head to the Mandara huts. The hike is about 5 miles (8 km), at a pace of 4 to 5 hours to acclimate to the altitude change. The hike is steadily uphill through the rainforest and light rain is expected in the afternoon. The scenery in this area is absolutely gorgeous with streams and waterfalls, as well as the opportunity to see exotic wildlife. We will stop for a quick lunch before heading to the next huts. Then, we arrive to the Mandara huts where we will be sleeping, which are similar to cabins with running water and toilets. Dinner will be served before heading to bed. (Total ascent: 2760ft/840m, during 3-4 hours hiking.)

To keep up our calorie intake, we will enjoy lunch and snacks along the hike. Then, we will being going to sleep very early at the Kibo Huts to prepare to prepare for a midnight hike towards the summit. (Total ascent: 3280ft/1000m, during 5-7 hours hiking.)

We will climb for 6-8 hours to Gillman's Point at 19229 ft (5861 m) to catch a beautiful sunrise from the highest point in Africa! Here we will celebrate, take photos and then begin the 5-6 hour descent down the mountain to get a full nights rest at the Horombo Huts. (Total ascent: 3280ft/1000m to Gilman's Point and 3920ft/1195m to Uhuru Peak, during 5-8 hours hiking. Total descent: 7200 ft/2195m, during 5-6 hours hiking.)
