COVID-19 Testing Available in the Serengeti

Serengeti Seronera COVID-19 Testing Facility

Last Updated: August 5, 2021

As of February 13th, PCR-type COVID-19 coronavirus tests are available in central Serengeti National Park, at Seronera Village and Kogatende Airstrip, in the north. These testing facilities have been set up in response to the increasing need for Coronavirus testing prior to guest’s return flights to their home countries. As of late, citizens of the United States, Canada, and other countries require proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours prior to their flight departure. Prior to this move by the Tanzanian government, the only options for testing were in the main cities, which would be prohibitive for those in the country with a strict sightseeing schedule.

COVID-19 Testing Procedure

Testing is available for all guests regardless of showing symptoms or not, and regardless if they need the test to fly onward to their next destination or not. The Seronera testing facility in the Serengeti is open between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm daily, while the Kogatende Airstrip testing facility in the north tests from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm daily. Appointments need to be scheduled in advance, so please talk with us (existing clients only), or your safari provider (all others), in order to schedule in advance via the official online portal, here (requires Tanzanian mobile phone number to book, so please contact your tour provider to arrange testing).

Testing will be done by a qualified medical professional via a nasal swab. Samples will be flown express to Dar es Salaam city for analysis, and results will be delivered via e-mail or Whatsapp within 48 hours. (So, if you are scheduled for a departure flight on Thursday evening, you should get tested on the prior Tuesday morning/afternoon in order to allow enough time for results to be delivered.)

Please note that this testing is not a service provided by Pamoja Safaris — it is set up by the Tanzanian government as a service to tourists.

COVID-19 Test Costs

The fee for the COVID test, whether in the city or at the new testing facility in the Serengeti, is USD$100 (or the Tanzanian shilling equivalent, approximately Tsh232,000). Payments can be made in cash, or via the Mpesa electronic payment system (for those who have access to a Tanzanian phone number/account). MasterCard or Visa credit or debit card payments will be charged a separate fee to cover the cost of payment processing.

In addition to this, there is a fee that must be paid, which differs according to your tour provider’s TATO (Tanzanian Association of Tour Operators) classification status. Non-members must pay an additional Tsh40,000 per guest tested, while members need to pay only Tsh20,000 per person.

COVID-19 Test Scheduling

If you are a Pamoja Safaris guest and need or want a COVID test prior to departing the country, please let us know prior to arrival, and we will set everything up for you in order to your results back before your departing flight. We will then do all of the scheduling on our end, through the electronic registration system.

If you are not traveling with us, please contact your safari company and ask for them to arrange a test on their end.

    Hello good morning.
We are traveling to Tanzania in August and wanted to know if the results ARE given in 48 hours after the test is taken. Do you normaly give the results in the first 48 h or there is a possibility of have the results later?

    Thank you and regards,

    • Pamoja Safaris says:

      Hello Sara,

Results are given within 48 hours after testing, via email. We encourage all visitors to get tested as early in the morning as possible on the day of testing in order to allow time for the samples to be flown out of the Serengeti and tested, with results back to you, before your international flight.

There are no options to get the results later — the results are sent as soon as the samples are tested.
