TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK

A LAND OF LAVA, SPRINGS, AND RED ELEPHANTS

Tsavo West National Park is a land of dramatic contrasts, where rugged volcanic landscapes meet lush oases teeming with wildlife. Known as the more scenic half of the Tsavo ecosystem, the park is defined by its rolling hills, lava flows, and the sparkling waters of Mzima Springs—a crystal-clear oasis that sustains hippos, crocodiles, and countless fish beneath its glassy surface. The park is also home to the famous “red elephants,” coated in the area’s distinctive red dust, as well as lions, leopards, giraffes, and a rich diversity of birdlife. Beyond its wildlife, Tsavo West is steeped in history, with ancient lava fields, caves, and the legend of the man-eating lions of Tsavo adding depth to its allure. With its breathtaking scenery, diverse habitats, and blend of wildlife and history, Tsavo West offers a unique safari experience that captures both the wild beauty and the untamed spirit of Kenya.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Tsavo West depends on whether you prefer dry-season wildlife concentration or the lush beauty of the rains. Here’s a breakdown by season:

January to February: Warm, dry weather with excellent visibility for game drives. Wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, and birdlife is plentiful.

March to May: The long rains bring vibrant greenery and spectacular scenery, but roads can become challenging. A great time for birdwatching and fewer tourists.

June to October: The long dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate near water sources such as Mzima Springs. The clear skies also make for excellent photography of the landscapes.

November to December: Short rains refresh the landscape, creating a lush environment while wildlife remains abundant. This season offers a balance of beauty, wildlife, and fewer crowds.

Overall, June to October is the best time for wildlife sightings, while March to May appeals to those who enjoy lush scenery and solitude.
