TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK
A LAND OF LAVA, SPRINGS, AND RED ELEPHANTS
Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and most iconic wildlife sanctuaries, famous for its vast open plains, dusty red earth, and abundant herds of elephants. Known for the “red elephants” coated in the park’s characteristic soil, Tsavo East offers classic African savanna landscapes where lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest roam freely. The park is less rugged than its western counterpart, with expansive horizons and numerous watering holes that attract large congregations of wildlife, making game drives particularly rewarding. Birdwatchers will also find the park captivating, with a variety of species thriving in its semi-arid environment. With its sense of openness, dramatic sunsets, and classic safari experience, Tsavo East captures the essence of Kenya’s wilderness and remains a must-visit destination for both first-time and seasoned travelers seeking an authentic African safari.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Tsavo East depends on whether you want to see wildlife concentrated near water or enjoy the park’s landscapes in lush conditions. Here’s a breakdown by season:
January to February: Warm, dry conditions make it ideal for game drives. Wildlife is easy to spot as animals gather around water sources.
March to May: Long rains bring green scenery and birdlife, but some roads may become challenging. Fewer tourists visit during this season, offering a quieter experience.
June to October: The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals concentrate around permanent waterholes. Clear skies also provide excellent photographic opportunities.
November to December: Short rains refresh the park, creating lush landscapes while wildlife remains active. This is a good compromise for fewer crowds and beautiful scenery.
Overall, June to October is the prime time for wildlife spotting, while March to May offers lush scenery and a quieter safari experience.
